One of the few municipal courses in continental Europe and it seems to flourish. It probably helps in this fairly rural part of France, that the German border is not far away. The course is actually closer to the capital of Germany's Saar region than Saarbrücken's own golf club. While the immediate area is generally hilly, the course winds through it masterfully and somehow manages to get away with only two significantly uphill shots (at #10 and #16). The only navigational glitch is a longer walk to tee #8.
After easing the player into the round with a comfortable short par 4, the next 11 holes play up and down in sometimes rather tight spaces - most of the quirk is encountered on this stretch. While most holes are very playable, there are some surprisingly tough challenges interspersed here or there - like the blind tee shots on #6 and #9 and the first two shots on #10. From the 13th on home the holes become more open and a few water features appear. It's a good mixture of styles, somehow even the golf villas alongside #16 belong.
Conditioning is a bit rustic throughout, but that is more than compensated for by the interesting hole designs. While there isn't any one aspect that stands out, the overall package is very compelling - simply a fun layout that does not try to be more than a very agreeable members' course.
